15 PGMA scholars get assistance
A total of 15 scholars under the President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo-Educational Assistance for Children and Youth in Regions (PGMA-EACYR) recently received educational assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office VI.
The PGMA-EACYR is being implemented by DSWD with a total of 50 beneficiaries in Western Visayas. Local Social Welfare and Development Officers were tapped for the identification of the beneficiaries, which included academic records and socio-economic status as the parameters.
"We hope that you will study even better. Out of thousands of students in the Region, you were chosen to benefit from this program. To the parents, we hope that you will support your children to excel in their studies," said DSWD Regional Director Teresita S. Rosales during the simple turnover ceremony in Ivisan, Capiz.
The beneficiaries, among the first to receive the assistance in the Region and all from Capiz, were identified as Laiza Bandellon, Joy Aligaya, Maycee Baranda, Charina Dile, Engelyn Barrios, all from Ivisan National High School; and Sheila Mie Umiten of Basiao National High School.
In Roxas City, the beneficiaries were Dairen Blanco, Cris Jean Adolfo, Ruth Jocson, Shelalyn Dela Cruz, Raffy Villarosa, Kristina Sulayao, Angelo Mangganam, all from Tanque National High School; and Santiago Medina, Jr. from Capiz National High School.
Each received P5000—which consist of the first two tranches at P2,500 per grading period. Should they maintain their grades, they will again receive the remaining P5,000 for the third and fourth grading period.
In her response, Umiten, one of the scholars was quoted saying, "This is a big help to us and we will treasure this."
This program was implemented to help poor but deserving students in public schools. If distributed, Ivisan, Capiz, six; Roxas City, nine; Tapaz, five; Antique, 13; and Cauayan in Negros Occidental, five.
Present during the turnover in Ivisan were Mayor Felipe Neri Yap, Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer Corazon Billones, Social Welfare and Development Officer III Julian Ledesma and Marita Obrigue from the LGU.
On the other hand, among those present in Roxas City who witnessed the ceremonial turnover of checks from DSWD to Mayor Vicente Bermejo were City Social Welfare and Development Officer Cynthia Besana and parents of the beneficiaries. (DSWD-6)
