'Simple' People Power celeb up for region's AFP
A "simple but meaningful" commemoration is up for the region's Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) as the country remembers the "People Power" EDSA bloodless revolution.
With a renewed vow "to support the Filipino masses and protect them from threats," Captain Lowen Gil Marquez said soldiers from the field will share the moment starting off in today's flag-raising ceremony in respective army detachments and similar AFP camps.
And like the promise of EDSA, Captain Marquez added that said support for the citizenry is primarily geared now towards the protection against the destabilization moves of the communist hierarchy.
"Support for the Filipino masses and protection from any threat particularly from the terror brought by the Communist Party of the Philippines – New People's Army – National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF)," Captain Marquez, commanding officer of the AFP's 3rd Civil Relation Unit said.
Such as the city braces anew for the usual local street protests of militant groups expected to disrupt traffic in major thoroughfares. For years now battlecry of rallyists in Iloilo are the same alongside chants of discontent against the government.
The People Power EDSA Revolution gathered in 1986 over 200,000 civilians, top political and military officials in Manila and highlighted days of protests and ended the regime of former President Ferdinand Marcos. It was marked with prayer rallies and series of nonviolent protests in what now stands as the "revolution that surprised the world."
