City dad wants PGMA to stay
If President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo steps down, Iloilo City has much to lose in terms of infrastructure projects such as the P200 million circumferential road. The radial road will benefit not only Iloilo City but also its neighboring municipalities.
Majority Floor Leader Eduardo Peñaredondo said the implementation of the P200 million circumferential road would be affected should the President resign from her post. He said the project will not come into reality if the President succumbs to the mounting pressure asking for her resignation amidst the national broadband network (NBN) deal controversy.
Peñaredondo made such statement in last week's gathering at the office of City Mayor Jerry Treñas meant to show their support to the beleaguered Philippine President. He is only one of the members of the local legislative body who expressed support to President Arroyo.
The circumferential road project is a national funded project purposely to liven up the economic activities in the areas covered by the Metro Iloilo Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC). The approval of the project was based on the economic impact, social impact, traffic impact among others. The government has already identified the source of the project and it is expected to start middle of this year.
Peñaredondo and several other officials embarked on the developments contributed by the President through Mayor Treñas and Representative Raul Gonzalez, Jr as they gave their strong support to the President. The President has already made clear she will not resign from her office and that she will finish her term until 2010.
According to Peñaredondo, the statement of support they gave to the President will serve as a strong signal of their support to the Arroyo administration.
Apart from city officials, Guimaras Governor Felipe Nava also showed his support to the President. Several other mayors and governors in the country showed their support to the President to counter the calls for her resignation.
