Barangay execs willing to help fight vs illegal drugs but
Barangay officials can only do so much, said Liga ng mga Barangay president Irene Ong relative to the fight against illegal drugs.
Ong, who sits as barangay captain of Brgy. President Roxas, City Proper, said all they could do is to monitor the people coming in and out of the barangay and identify whose houses they are visiting especially at night.
Ong said the arrest and identification of suspected drug pushers is primarily a police work.
Earlier, Mayor Jerry Treñas ordered the reactivation of the Barangay Anti-Drugs Abuse Council (Badac) to help in the campaign against illegal drugs.
The activation of the Badac is the chief executive's response to the call of Department of Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez Sr. to intensify the war against the illegal drugs trade in the city.
The Justice Secretary has already issued a statement to all the barangay captains that whoever is found liable for having links and direct association with suspected drug lords should suffer the consequences.
Ong said there are already several barangay captains who gave tips to the police with regard to the illegal drugs problem in their barangays. Their identities are made confidential in order to protect them and their families, said Ong.
