7 bands vie for Banda Musika competition
Seven amateur bands are gearing up to perform at the first-ever Banda Musika sa Plaza – A Revival Band Competition on Friday, February 29th, at the Jaro Plaza.
City Tourism Officer (CTO) Benito Jimena said that the event is in celebration of the 18th National Arts Month mandated by Presidential Proclamation no. 683-1991.
"The Banda Musika will be a contest between various groups from tertiary schools and universities in the city. This is our way of tapping the talents of the youth and putting them to good use, at the same time making the public appreciate these youthful talents," Jimena said.
This year's theme for the celebration is "Ani ng Sining: Arts in Public Spaces."
Under the competition guidelines, each band should render two songs which are revivals from the 60s to the 90s. Each band shall be composed of a maximum of 6 members, and must use instruments provided by the tourism office although the bringing of handheld instruments like acoustic guitars and beat boxes will be allowed. Kind of songs to be played may be pop, mellow, slow rock and rhythm and blues.
The champion brings home P8,000; first runner-up pockets P5,000 while the second runner-up gets a guaranteed P3,000.
Jimena also mentioned that aside from Mayor Jerry P. Treñas, other sponsors for the event are Biscocho House, Coca-cola Bottler's Phils., Inc., Deco's / Mang Inasal, Deocampo's, Panaderia de Molo and Pepsi Cola Products Phils., Inc. (PIO)
