Aklan solon favors CARP extension
KALIBO, Aklan -- Aklan Rep. Florencio Miraflores favors the extension of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) although he is not a member of the agrarian reform committee in the lower house.
Miraflores said several poor residents in Aklan have benefited from the program with the province, being one of the major beneficiaries of CARP.
"The CARP is a very vital legislation that addresses not only social inequity, but for Aklan, it has manifested contribution through landmark projects that spell great difference in the lives of the residence. I am endorsing the CARP beyond 2008," Miraflores said.
The Aklan solon also said that the CARP had helped much in the production of agriculture products which is the twin thrusts of the Aklan provincial government along with tourism.
Grace Quimpo of the Department of Agrarian Reform provincial office in an interview said that the CARP had contributed P110 million worth of infrastructure and P165.70 million of farm to market roads to the development of the province. Another P49.97 million was allotted for irrigation projects.
"DAR-Aklan was able to distribute 20,441 hectares of land to 16,294 farmers, 25 farm to market roads spanning 68 kilometers, 11 irrigation projects serving 2,577 hectares of riceland. Worth-noting is the construction of the Timbaban-Sipac Bridge in Madalag, Aklan considered to be the first huge CARP infrastructure project in Western Visayas," Quimpo said. (PNA)
