DOLE notes drop in laid-off workers
Retrenchments and layoffs of workers dropped significantly by 65.5 percent.
This was announced by the Department of Labor and Employment. The Labor department disclosed that based on the record of the Bureau of Labor and Employment Statistics, the said retrenchments and layoffs of workers dropped during the first semester of year 2007.
Acting Labor and Employment Secretary Marianito D. Roque said that in absolute terms, the number of retrenched workers dropped by about 39,000 from 59,376 in first half of year 2006 to 20,478 in the same period last year.
Roquero also said that from January to June 2007, compliance to the minimum wage improved at 84.2 percent from 82.6 percent and 81.3 percent during the same period in 2006 and 2005, respectively.
The DOLE explained that the robust growth of the economy in 2007 generated a ripple effect on the industry's capability to keep their workers.
The economy grew in 2007, less workers were retrenched with more establishments complying with the minimum wage and generating more jobs, the DOLE press report disclosed. (PIA)
