AKELCO urges new resorts to provide own generator sets
BORACAY Island -- Considering the power shortage being experienced by residents in Western Visayas, the Aklan Electric Cooperative (AKELCO) that distributes electricity to this resort island is urging new resort owners to have their own generator sets.
According to Engr. Rogen Delos Reyes, acting assistant general manager for operations and engineering of AKELCO, their available peak load for Boracay which is 10- megawatt is already being utilized. Because of this, the power cooperative fears of possible overheat to occur on its power distribution plant whenever new resort owners would insist to get the electricity from AKELCO.
"Our substation will be in danger of we push it to its limit. We ask the new resorts to operate their own generator sets until we are able to stabilize the electricity in Boracay and hopefully it would be before this year ends," said Delos Reyes.
Engr, Delos Reyes, however, pinpointed also the ongoing infrastructure development and weather condition which delay the power rehabilitation effort in this resort island.
"Our team being deployed to a certain area to fix our power line is being delayed by the blockade in some feeder roads because of the ongoing construction there," Delos Reyes said.
Currently, the AKELCO is building a 10 MVA power distribution power in this resort island. There is also a submarine-line connecting to Boracay Island from nearby Caticlan, Aklan that is being repaired. (PNA)
