New Carpenter's Bridge to open on June 6
Inconvenience felt by motorists going to Mandurriao district passing Barangay Tabucan will finally end as the newly constructed Carpenter's Bridge is set to open on June 6, 2008. The bridge was temporarily closed in February to have its approaches completed.
In its advisory to the office of Mayor Jerry Treñas, the Department of Public Works and Highways said the bridge could already be used by June 6, 2008. DPWH is now in the final stage of completion of the Carpenter's Bridge.
The construction of the new bridge is under Phase II, Contract Package No. 2 of the Stage 1 of the Iloilo Flood Control Project. The construction started last March 1, 2006. The entire Iloilo Flood Control Project cost P230 million. The project is being undertaken by China-International Water and Electrical Corporation.
At present, the motorists have to bear the inconvenience brought about by the construction. They have to pass by the old bridge. The city government is planning to rehabilitate the old bridge and convert it into a promenade where people can relax. Concrete benches will be constructed and flowering plants will be planted to beautify the area. No vehicles would be allowed to use the old bridge.
Meanwhile, Mayor Treñas said the new "Double A" slaughterhouse at Brgy. Tacas, Jaro district will have its final test run on May 29 and actual operation by first week of June. The final dry run will have 40 hogs to be slaughtered to test the equipment.
The dry-run and the scheduled opening of the multi-million abattoir have been reset for number of times and for various reasons.
