City receives P3M electrification project
The city government received some P3 million worth of projects under the government's Expanded Electrification Program. The same program provided P8.8 million electricity projects in two relocation sites.
In last Friday's "Climate Change, Energy and Development Planning: A multi-sectoral regional dialogue", Department of Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes signed a memorandum of agreement with Mayor Jerry Treñas and Panay Electric Company (Peco) Vice President for Administration Edmund Afzelius for the electrification of Don Delfin Gonzales Avenue in Sitio Ilaya, Tabuc Suba, Jaro. The electrification project amounted to P2,133,557.16. The project was approved last March 13, 2008.
The memorandum of agreement was also signed for the urban electrification project of Iloilo City thru street lighting project. It amounted to P932,742.75. The signatories of the project are the DOE, Panay Power Corporation and the chief executive.
The funding for the electrification of Don Delfin Avenue is sourced from the electrification funds accrued from the commercial operation of Panay Power Corporation. PECO served as the project proponent.
The urban electrification project of the city through street lighting will be sourced out from the development and livelihood funds accrued from the operation of Panay Power Corporation. The project proposal presented by the city government was approved last May 14, 2008. The project aims to provide illumination for the maintenance of peace and order in the locality. It will attract investors and extend productivity of the target beneficiaries even at night time.
According to Reyes, the department with the participation of power sector will continue to bank on electrification programs in the country particularly in far-flung barangays to bring progress and better quality of life. The program will continue with the cooperative effort of the local government.
Treñas, on the other hand, said three more electrification projects in the city awaits the approval of the concerned agency. These are the electrification project in the Gawad Kalinga project site of Archbishop Angel Lagdameo and the street lighting of Barangays San Juan and Calumpang.
San Juan and Calumpang are the biggest and crowded barangays in the city. The streetlights will be set up inside the barangay itself to further illuminate the area, said Treñas.
Meanwhile, the ceremonial switch-on for the electrification projects in Barangay Sooc, Arevalo and Barangay Lanit, Jaro was held Friday. The electrification project amounted to P8,864,446.44. The project was approved March 2006 with Peco as the proponent. The electrification project was sourced out from the accrued commercial operation of Panay Power Corporation.
Lanit and Sooc are two of the city's relocation sites where beneficiaries were made to transfer without the basic facilities such as electricity.
