City vet assures consumers of clean pork
City Veterinarian Tomas Forteza assured the consumers of clean pork slaughtered at the new "Double A" abattoir in Brgy. Tacas, Jaro. He said four employees from his office underwent a Butcher's Training Course given by the Bureau of Animal Industry-Animal Product Development Center in Marulas, Bulacan.
The training was echoed to 34 other people who are directly involved in the operation of the multi-million modern slaughterhouse.
Cleanliness is maintained at the new slaughterhouse through the used of a proper disposal system. The abattoir has a P5.5 million waste water facility to ensure proper liquid waste disposal.
Forteza added the old abattoir is now closed for hog-slaughtering but still caters to clients who wish to butcher cattle. The new slaughterhouse has no cattle line to address the needs of those in the cattle butchering business.
The new facility also charges a slaughter fee of P1.50 per kilo as labor cost for the skilled butchers. At present, it can accommodate 150 heads of pig or 50-60 heads per hour. The 2.3 hectare abattoir began catering to the general public last July 14, 2008.
According to Mayor Jerry Treñas, the slaughterhouse is also open to municipalities that wish to avail of its high-standard services. "We actually had a dry-run which began a few months ago, and there we saw the necessary changes or improvement needed when we underwent equipment testing and actual operation runs," Treñas said.
The operation of the city's multi-million facility would mean healthier meat consumption for the Ilonggos after the slaughtered hog is delivered in the different markets in the city, said Treñas.
Earlier, the chief executive wants to update the facility with the installation of a blast freezer to cater the needs of those businessmen who are sending pork and meat products in the different parts of the country.
