3 killed, 2 injured in fatal car accident
BACOLOD CITY – Three people died and two others were injured when their speeding car crashed into electrical posts at a main road here yesterday.
Hernani Nemes Jr., 25, Peter Sasutana, 26, both of Brgy. Tangub, Bacolod, and Lorenie Chavez, 28, of Cansilayan, Murcia town, Negros Occidental, died on the spot when the black Honda Civic they were riding smashed into light post at Araneta Street, Bacolod, at about 1 a.m. yesterday, PO2 Regino Rex Eduardo of the Traffic Management Unit, said.
Two other passengers, namely, Mark Jun Lozada, 22, and Joselito Discartin, 21, both of Cadiz City, were brought to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod and were already stable as of noon yesterday, Eduardo said.
Witnesses told the police that the vehicle, which was driven by Nemes, rolled four times after the crash, throwing out four of the other passengers' meters away before settling upside down near a Shell pump station.
Eduardo said that the car with plate number UCL-598 may have been running at a speed of at least 90 kilometers per hour from the south of the city when it crossed the other lane and bumped head-on into the steel and concrete posts near Tohonka Motors.
Minutes after the crash, paramedics had to pry out Nemes from the car, whose mid-section had crumpled.
Blood and broken car parts were all over the place as rescuers applied first-aid to the injured.
A fire truck arrived at the scene amid concern that leaking fuel from the vehicle could trigger a fire as it was located in front of a gasoline station.
Rogelio, Nemes' father, said that the five have been drinking because it was Hernani's birthday on Sunday.
He was asleep and only knew that they had left when they were informed about the incident, Rogelio said.
Rogelio said that Hernani, who had been adopted by an uncle, had hugged him tightly hours before his death.
“He told me he really loved me. Maybe that was his way of saying goodbye.”
