Anything under the Sun
Pro-choice is not pro-choice (1)
In the present controversy on the use of contraceptives for family planning are two major players: The Pro-Choice and the Pro-Life.
There is no quarrel as to the common ultimate end of these two groups – to reduce population growth. This is a very legitimate end. So, the issue here is which method to adopt—by contraceptives as propagated by the Pro-Choice or the natural method of the Pro-Life. This is more of an ethical and moral issue and therefore, the basic precept here is: Does the end justify the means?
To start with, this writer cannot understand why the Pro-Choice people self-styled themselves as such – Pro-Choice. A pro-choice is a neutral person. He does not take sides in a controversy.
Here, the Pro-Choice group is taking side already by campaigning on what side to take – to favor sex contraceptives. Is this not rather an inconsistent stand? They say: "Make your choice." But they recommend only one choice – contraceptives. Is this not like tying a person to a post and then telling him to make a choice? And yet this group says this is democratic.
This reminds us of the very famous scene in the Paradise. God created man with a free will. He commanded our first parents not to eat the fruit of a forbidden tree.
Here comes Satan. He lured them by saying something like this: "God gave you free will. Exercise your freedom." Very nice and attractive words. But he concluded: "Eat that fruit." Yes, he told them to exercise that freedom but gave them only one choice – to eat the fruit.
Furthermore, God sees to it that every part of the human body has its own specific and particular function. The eyes are there to see, the ears are there to hear. The mouth is there to eat, the nose is there to breath. If we blindfold a person, plug his ears, gag his mouth and close his nose -- that is depriving him of the use of these organs as God will them, and therefore is a breach of Divine law.
In like manner, the sexual organs of man and woman are made for reproduction of the human race and to prevent them from functioning as God wants them, is also a breach of God's will.
Let us now go to the Pro-Life group. They are also for family planning but in a different way. It is in accordance with the will of God which we always pray in Our Father, thus: "Thy will be done on earth..."
And what is that will of God? He commanded Adam and Eve to "go out and multiply". He promised Abraham that his descendants will be as many as the grain of sands on the beaches and the stars in the sky. From the context of the human comprehension, this number is quite infinite – incapable of being counted.
Why does God wills us to be many? Because God is Love. He wanted as much as many people possible to share in his eternal glory and bliss.
But God also anticipates that this world of ours is a small one and cannot support an infinite number of people. Time will come when we will all be crowded like a pack of sardines in a can. (To be continued)
