Water supply in portions of city now safe for drinking
The water supplied by the Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) in some portions of the city and nearby towns is now safe for drinking.
An advisory dated August 1, 2008 provided by the MIWD management to the office of City Mayor Jerry Treñas showed that water samples taken from the five districts in the city and four towns were found to be "bacteriologically negative."
Water supply in General Luna, Ledesma, Guanco, Aldeguer and Delgado Streets, all in the City Proper is already considered as safe to drink. The other areas where water is already found safe for drinking are in Tanza area (Molo), R. Mapa Street and BS Aquino Drive in Mandurriao.
Water samples taken from El 98, Libertad Street, Barangay Dungon B and CPU area (Jaro); Burgos, Jereos and Huervana Streets in Lapaz also passed in the water potability test conducted by the water district.
In the same advisory, the MIWD made clear that the other service areas which are not included in the list are still subject for potability test as soon as enough pressure is available in the distribution lines.
Samples taken from Taft Street, Barangay Bagacay (Maasin); Barangay Talanghauan in Cabatuan; Arroyo, Rizal Street and Barangay Bolong in Sta. Barbara and Gonzaga and Barangay Ungka in Pavia are likewise negative for bacteria.
The 13 city barangays included in the advisory list only represent seven percent of total number of barangays in the city.
The water supply in the city and other service areas of the MIWD got affected after its main pipeline in Barangay Amerang, Cabatuan was destroyed by Typhoon Frank.
"We want to assure that our maintenance crew is continuously undertaking repair of service lines damaged by the typhoon and flushing of the pipelines to ensure safety through the water we deliver to you," the MIWD management said.
