Bright Minds Reading Program to be implemented in Iloilo
Bright Minds Reading (BMR) Program in partnership with Ronald MacDonald House of Charities, Department of Education, Division of Iloilo and supported by the Province of Iloilo has recently provided the starting kits which will jumpstart the program in 20 selected school-beneficiaries in the Province.
The Division of Iloilo has identified the least performing elementary schools based on the results of the Reading Test Results of the National and Division Achievement Tests for the last three years. The identified least performing elementary schools in reading performance would be the recipients of the BMR Program.
The Principal, Grade 1 Teacher and Supervisor of the identified schools have been trained by the DepEd – NCR trainors on the use of the BMR kits. While teachers were oriented on the conduct of the BMR pre and post tests.
The program, teaching beginning reading has four objectives namely, the development of genuine love for reading; the development of comprehension and critical thinking skills, oral language development and correct use of grammatical structures and lastly the development of decoding skills.
Given the objectives, a four-pronged approach is used in teaching beginning reading that uses children's literature as a springboard in developing reading skills among the beginning readers. The approaches are as follows, story sharing by the teacher, postreading activities, grammar and oral language development and lastly transfer stage.
