Iloilo Gardenia Lions to conduct Diabetes Screening

True to its motto "We Serve", Iloilo Gardenia Lions Club will conduct a free Diabetes Screening and ECG in Barangay Poblacion, Molo on August 30, 2008 .
Iloilo Gardenia Lions Club President, Dr. Liza Assumpta Mabunay-Jover, DMD, said 50 barangay residents of Brgy. Poblacion, under the leadership of Punong Barangay Ignacio P. Magahum, will avail of the free Diabetes Screening and 30 will get free Electrocardiogram (ECG) testing.
Mabunay-Jover said the Diabetes Screening is one way to prevent or cure Diabetes at the early stage. She pointed out that diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness among people between the ages of 20 to 74. Nearly one-half of people with known diabetes have some degree of diabetic retinopathy.
She said that anyone with diabetes is at risk for the visual complications that result from diabetes. The Lions Eye Health Program (LEHP) is a public awareness program that empowers communities to save sight. LEHP raises awareness of the causes of preventable vision loss, such as diabetic eye diseases, glaucoma and low vision.
Mabunay-Jover said this free Diabetes Screening and ECG is only among the projects being implemented by her club for the benefit of selected barangay residents. She said the service project meet the international goals of Lions Clubs International as well as the needs of their local communities.
Earlier, the Iloilo Gardenia Lions Club also distributed relief goods in some barangays which were severely damaged by Typhoon Frank.
Among their other civic oriented activities, the Iloilo Gardenia Lions Club also donated dental equipment and surgical instruments to Jaro medical and dental health centers which were attended by ABC Jaro District President Jonas Belosillo of Brgy. Simon Ledesma. Brgy. Sambag under Brgy. Captain Sinon J. Janay also received 10 chairs from the club.
Mabunay-Jover also led the distribution of clothes to the pediatric ward of Western Visayas Medical Center while West Visayas State University Hospital was also given bed sheets to different wards.
The Diabetes Screening and ECG Test will be conducted in cooperation with Servier Phil.. On the same day, pamphlets on glaucoma, diabetic blindness and cataract will be distributed too. The Mabunay group of dental practitioners will also donate 100 dental textbooks and references to Iloilo Doctors College – School of Dentistry, the only dental school in the Visayas.
Mabunay-Jover is also sponsoring one U.P. High School scholar - Mary Luigi Luke H. Guillamas, with the assistance of Iloilo Gardenia Lion's Club.
