Series of forums set in observance of Family Week
BACOLOD CITY -- Department of Social Services and Development (DSSD) head Sally Abelarde along with City Councilor Celia Flor, chairman of the Sangguniang Panglungsod Committee on Family and Early Childhood Development, announced that a series of family forum will be conducted this week in various schools in observance of the Family Week celebration.
Abelarde said that a lot of resource speakers will be invited to speak about the responsibilities and roles of parents in rearing their children. The citywide Family Week celebration began last September 20, 2008 and it will end on September 28, 2008 with the theme "Fathers and Families, Responsibilities and Challenges" with the Slogan entitled "Maabilidad si Dad."
On the other hand, City Councilor Flor clarified that the slogan has no negative inclination but it refers to the responsibilities of a father in rearing his children. She has apprehension that a family in today's generation has so many obstacles because of violence and physical abuse usually committed by the father. She said this problem had been existing even when she was still working with a non-government organization.
Meanwhile, Pastor Joshua Jimena, one of the invited guests during the press conference, said that lack of male leadership has been the root causes why a family never strengthened.
"A father must set an example in a Christian way of living," he stressed. He further said that oftentimes a family breaks because of lack of male leadership in a family. The Local Council for Filipino Families led by the DSSD and other private organizations scheduled various family forum on September 24-26, 2008 at Brgy. Singcang-Airport National High School, C.V Ramos Elementary School, Domingo Lacson National High School, Mansilingan National High School, Estefania Elementary School and E. Garcia Elementary School.
Abelarde said that there will be a panel of interactors from the host school, barangay and police representative. Other activities scheduled are Poster Making Contest, Family Logo Contest, Media Information drive and Marriage and family enrichment.
