DOST gears up for WV technology transfer
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is strengthening its technology transfer activities to help fuel the socio-economic initiative of the of the government in step with the Arroyo administration’s thrust in achieving the First World status in 20 years.
This was the gist of the discussion of DOST 6 Regional Director Rowen R. Gelonga during the PIA-CATV program, recently.
He clarified during the PIA-CATV program that the research and development activities are conducted by DOST-Research and Development Institutes based in Bicutan;Diliman; and i Los Banos, and that the DOST at the regional level, "our madate is more on technology transfer and commercialization".
"So, we at the regional level will only help in the transfer of the technology that our specialized institutes have developed," Gelonga emphasized.
He said that they are now focusing on Small Enterprises Technology Upgrading Program or SETUP.
"Through SETUP, we help enhance the competitiveness of micro, small and medium enterprises through technological interventions, and therefore it is expected that it will create employment, generate revenues for the economy and help the poverty alleviation program of the government," Gelonga said.
The DOST regional head said that the SETUP priority sectors are: Natural Fibers, GHD and Fashion Accessories, Furniture, Food Processing, Metals and Engineering, Horticulture, and Aqua-marine.(PIA/T.Villavert)
