Cuartero town invokes help of backyard garden
ROXAS CITY -- A local government unit (LGU) in Capiz has been pushing for an alternative livelihood initiative to raise family income amidst the current global economic crisis.
Cuartero town mayor Roger Flores said that he had been pushing for the "Gulayan sa Bakuran" project in all their households in their municipality.
Flores said that aside from the "Gulayan" project, they have also introduced the integrated farming concept "even in the household's small area" for animal and vegetable as well as fruit production.
He added that this is also their contribution to the government's effort to mitigate hunger in the countryside through food sufficiency efforts.
As their counterpart, the municipal government has been providing their constituents free vegetable seeds and technical assistance, he said.
Flores also said that they are also setting aside an annual budget for the conduct of annual evaluation of the Gulayan sa Bakuran project.
Recently, the winners for said evaluation are Teresita Arcenas of Brgy. Balingasag, first place; Wilfredo Homballas of Poblacion Takas, second; and Melchor Estorque of Balingasag, third, receiving P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000 cash price, respectively.
Meanwhile, the government has affirmed its commitment to fight hunger and malnutrition in the countryside.
Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap said that the DA is also doubling its effort to meet the country's food sufficiency target.
Yap also said that the DA will be an instrument in ensuring the Filipino people's right to food. (PIA)
