DENR intensifies establishment of geodetic control points in Western Visayas
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is now working doubly to increase the number of geodetic control points locally known as "mohon" in Western Visayas.
The effort is under the Philippine Reference System (PRS 92) program of the national government that aimed to establish its own recording coordinates based on the universal system.
A GCP is the basis for the computation of the technical descriptions in any title areas or jurisdiction.
DENR regional public affairs office chief, Rhodora Capulso said several pilot activities were implemented in Western Visayas last year to familiarize technical persons on how to do it which was complemented by a massive information education to raise the awareness of the community about the program.
She explained that the establishment of control points comes in four orders.
The first order was the establishment of control points with a distance of 500 kilometers between two points. The second order was the putting up of control points with 100 kilometers as the distance of one control point to the other.
The two orders were already completed and they are now embarking on the third order, which is the establishment of two control points in every barangay.
The program is going on in the municipalities of Barotac Viejo, Barotac Nuevo, Ajuy and Banate.
Similarly, 187 control points were already established in Antique covering municipalities of Sibalom, San Jose, Hamtic, Tobias and Anini-y.
In Aklan 225 control points were installed covering the towns of Batan, Altavas, Balete and Banga.
Capulso added that 1, 000 monuments will be erected in Iloilo province and 672 in Capiz next year.
The fourth order is to ensure that the control points are made even closer to each other.
The ultimate goal is to cover the entire country because similar activities are also being done in other regions aside from Western Visayas, Capulso added.
In addition to the establishment of new GPC, the DENR is also into "recovery of the old Control Points so that the computation of its coordinates will now be converted into the new computations."
“If ever, there may be some people going around in your area and asking for some data or looking for the old Geodetic Control Points or even establishing the “mohon” itself, please ask for their identification document and give them your support”, DENR Regional Executive Director Lormelyn E. Claudio told residents. “In this small way, you had helped our government in its developmental program.” (PNA)
