Barangays told: No excessive X'mas lights
Mayor Jerry P. Treñas Wednesday directed all barangay officials in the city to refrain from putting up Christmas trees and other decorations adorned with Christmas lights.
The mayor's directive after he signed Memorandum Order 739 S-2008.
The city government move is putting more teeth to the implementation of Executive Order 41-A issued last August 20 by strengthening the fuel and energy conservation program, especially during the holiday season.
Treñas said the city government is paying additional P98,000 for this season alone on top of its more than P7 million regular monthly electric bill.
He said that with already high electric bill in the city, particularly in barangays, immediate measures must be undertaken to prevent excessive use of electricity for Christmas decorations as part of the energy conservation effort.
Treñas said the barangay officials are not refrained from putting up Christmas trees and decorations in their respective areas as long as these are not adorned with lights or unless these lights are connected to private establishments or persons.
He said the city districts will be allowed to put up only one Christmas tree adorned with lights preferably in the public plaza but with not with excessive lights. (PNA)
