Tsunami scare hits Bora anew
BORACAY ISLAND -- A ‘silent panic’ was back here anew particularly in beachfront properties with text messages passed around locals and beach resort managers. The reason? There was a supposed government warning cum precaution on a Tsunami that will hit. World-famous Boracay Island, adjudged one of the top 20 beach destinations in the world was not specifically mentioned however the "warning" reached the island-paradise as well.
One Filipino resort manager spoke with The News Today (TNT) saying this particular "warning" was received "more seriously" than previous text messages. No word was leaked to visitors in order to avert any panic and concern however resort staff kept watch of the sea condition till early morning yesterday.
One beachfront property had six staff by the veranda as winds did gain strength late Tuesday evening and water due to high tide reached just outside the resort cum hotel.
"This is good sign... normal for the water during high tide to be right outside our hotel… But we will just stay here in case something not normal occurs," one local guy who also serve as island-hopping guide shared.
"Not normal" would be to have the sea water way out of the beachfront even at the scheduled high tide. Such has not happened of course in Boracay history.
Bars and nightspots with bean bags and tables set up by the shore rushed to put everything back by 9:30pm with the winds picking up though.
The purported warning quoted the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOCS) as the supposed source.
However a check with the PHILVOCS website showed none of the Tsunami possibility nor warning for Boracay and any other islands in the country.
