City mulls communal toilet in waterfront barangays
The city government is contemplating of constructing communal comfort rooms in the different parts of the city particularly in the waterfront barangays.
Mayor Jerry Treñas said the plan to build communal toilets cropped up after series of declogging operations in the waterfront barangays.
One of the problems identified by the team conducting the declogging operations is the presence of human waste that blocks the flow of water along the drainage areas, said Treñas.
The City Engineers Office (CEO) began conducting declogging operations after the city government bought the P5 million declogging machine. The purchase of the declogging machine is part of the city's solution in its flood problem. Even during light rains, major streets become flooded.
Treñas said all the communal toilets must be constructed in government or barangay properties. It is a health concern that affects the residents along the area.
Initially, the plan is to cluster the barangays. There are eight waterfront barangays namely Muelle Loney, Zamora, Concepcion, Sto. Rosario-Duran, Gen. Hughes, Legaspi, Monica and Dela Rama,
Treñas said each cluster of barangays will have one communal toilet for the needs of the residents. He, however, could not say yet on when to start the project.
Aside from the human waste, the old pipes of the Metro Iloilo Water District and loads of plastic garbage also constrict the course of water, said Treñas.
