BFAD checks ‘suspicious salt’ out in public markets
A citywide check is now ongoing in various public markets of Iloilo following concerns raised on “suspicious” looking salt here.
With salt samples sent to the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) Regional Office 6, Bombo Radyo Iloilo got the confirmation from Regional Director Nenita Gallardo.
The salt apparently appears contaminated and mixed with a “foreign substance” as both vendors and buying public sought answers.
A number of complainant went to said radio station as word got out of the “suspicious” salt sold for days now. The salt samples came from both city-based concerned citizens and the province.
Director Gallardo when reached by Bombo Radyo for update said corresponding laboratory check will be made by BFAD Central Office in Manila. No word as of yet if indeed the salt samples were contaminated or what chemical if any is present here.
Director Gallardo further assured the public though that BFAD representatives are making the rounds to double check the report.
Meantime, a clarification was made by the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) here that no way for fertilizer salt given to farmers to be the suspected chemical. PCA Regional Office 6 director Jose Cruz said that contrary to talks, fertilizer salt is far from the culprit since such are brown in color.
Cruz also said that all distribution to farmers of the fertilizer salt came with the clarification that such are not for cooking.
