MIGEDC-JICA conduct social experimentation on traffic
The Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC) in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the Multi-stakeholder Transport Planning and Traffic Management Improvement in Metro Iloilo-Guimaras (MTMI-MIG) program is set to conduct a social experimentation on the exclusive left turn lane, a traffic scheme starting Jan. 12-15, 2009.
This social experimentation is to be undertaken at the intersection of Iloilo Supermart Molo fronting Caltex Station where an observed traffic congestion and intersection delays and long lines of vehicles coming and going to and from the City, Mandurriao, Arevalo and Molo is a constant occurrence. So as not to congest that intersection at peak hours of 7am to 10am and at 4pm to 7pm, an exclusive left turn lane will be set up to allow motorists to take a left turn going to Mandurriao.
In order to establish baseline information for this social experimentation, a survey will be conducted by a UPV survey team prior to this traffic measure. The idea behind the traffic experimentation is to show how an exclusive left turn lane will facilitate or expedite the free movement of vehicles along just one direction and so to give way to the spontaneous flow of traffic.
As can easily be seen, the intersection delays because the 2-way lane create a long line of motor vehicles that build up to obstruct those coming from the opposite directions, i.e. coming from, going through Molo to the City, Arevalo and Mandurriao.
