WB looks into possibility of helping Iloilo City address garbage issues
Representatives from the World Bank (WB) and the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC) arrived in Iloilo Tuesday for a scoping mission that aimed to formulate measures on how to mitigate burning at the Calajunan dumpsite and control the burning of household wastes.
The group composed of Qing Wang of the WB committee on special rural development based in Washington D.C.; Gerardo Parco, operations officer of the Philippine Sustainable Development Unit in World Bank-Manila; WB operations officer Christopher Ancheta and Eli Ildefonso of the NSWMC secretariat made a courtesy call at the office of Mayor Jerry P. Treñas on Tuesday and presented possible grant for a solid waste facility.
Specifically, they would look into how to control the burning of wastes especially in homes and establish mitigating measures to control combustion at the Calajunan dumpsite in Mandurriao district.
“We cannot stop it using water because of the methane gas. We don’t really have the technology to stop that,” he said referring to the dumpsite.
The group also took a site visit to the 28-hectare dumpsite which is now in the process of being converted to a sanitary landfill.
Meanwhile, the mayor said the city is yet to comply with the requirements such as the resolutions from the Solid Waste Management Board (SWMB) and the Sangguniang Panlungsod to avail of the said grant. (PNA)
