Completion of Iloilo Flood Control Project set in 2010
The billion-peso Iloilo Flood Control Project funded by the Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC) is expected to be completed in 2010.
The project comes in two packages, the first package being undertaken by the China Waters and the second one by the Hanjin Industries Inc.
A project status report submitted by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to the office of Mayor Jerry P. Treñas disclosed that as of end of January this year, the actual accomplishment done in projects under Package I was already at 61.62 percent.
The package includes the construction of Jaro Floodway which is now 50.64 percent completed. The floodway covers construction of the Pagsanga-an, Anilao, Tacas, Balabago, Buhang and Bitoon Bridges and the Jaro floodway itself.
Also included in the package are the improvement of the Aganan River, which was 6.020 percent completed and the Tigum River improvement pegged at 4.97 percent.
Projects under Package I are set to be completed on July 11, 2010.
On the other hand, the Hanjin Industries reported a 71.079 percent completion of projects under Package II, which is 17.44 percent ahead of schedule.
Based on the project status report, the contractor the improvement of the Jaro River Mouth was already 90.35 percent completed; Iloilo River, 96.21 percent; Upper Ingore Creek, 80.865 percent and the Carpenter’s Bridge was at 95.13 percent.
The entire Package II package is expected to be finished on February 7, 2010.
The flood control project was designed to address the flooding problem that is being experienced by city residents everytime heavy rains occur. (PNA)
