Cano Tan claims he is pure Filipino
“I am a natural-born Filipino and is very qualified to run as congressman of Bacolod City in the 2010 elections,” Ricardo “Cano” Tan argued after the proliferation of text messages questioning his citizenship.
Tan said he is a pure-blooded Bacolodnon since he was born in Bacolod and had spent his growing up years in Dawis in Brgy. 14.
“Ever since, my loyalty is with the Filipino flag and dedicated my time to the service of the Filipino people in my different capacities,” he added.
“I have never been to China or even an attempt to change my citizenship to Chinese so what’s wrong with that?” Tan questioned.
The text message goes this way: “Tan’s father was pure Chinese hence an alien. See the 1935 Constitution. At the most he is only a naturalized Filipino. That means he is not qualified to run for congressman. See Article 6 Section 6 of the 1987 Constitution.”
“Maybe they were threatened by me as I announced my desire to run as congressman this 2010,” Tan said with a smile.
Tan recalled that some said ‘the more the merrier’ but it seems they don’t want that to happen here in Bacolod especially on the slot of congressman.
Tan who happened as very close to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is presently the Director of Land Transportation Office in National Capital Region.
He is also one of the founders of Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino known as KAMPI in the islands of Panay and Negros who recently got the support of 5th District Congressman Ignacio Arroyo, the president’s brother-in-law, on his plan.
