Don Salvador Benedicto eyed as summer capital of Negros
BACOLOD CITY -- The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Negros Occidental went to the municipality of Don Salvador Benedicto yesterday to conduct a public hearing on the proposal of making it the summer capital of the province.
Sangguniang Panlalawigan Committee on Tourism Vice-chairman Nehemias de la Cruz, who happened to be the former mayor of the town, drafted an ordinance for this matter.
Vice Governor Emilio Yulo III said developing Don Salvador Benedicto into an eco-tourism town will attract more tourists to Negros Occidental because of its scenic attractions, and its proximity to the Mambukal Mountain Resort in Murcia.
Mayor Laurence Marxlen dela Cruz, son of Board Member dela Cruz, is very grateful with the move of the Sanggunian as it will give a big boost to the municipality when it will be realized and supported by the august body.
“Maybe to other people it would mean a piece of paper or a mere declaration but for us, the declaration will be our gateway to our dream as the Baguio of Negros Occidental,” he said.
The town of Don Salvador Benedicto is known for its constant cool weather with a distance of 42 km. away from Bacolod City.
Hundreds of fully-grown Benguet pines planted along the municipal highway gives off the Baguio scent of pine.
Another attraction in town is the Malatan-og waterfalls which holds the distinction of being the seat of the revolutionary forces during the Japanese occupation.
