Cash incentives up for top public school grads
Elementary pupils and high school students in public schools who will graduate this school year as valedictorian or salutatorian will receive incentives from the city government. The incentives range from P1,000 to P300 for each honor student.
Mayor Jerry Treñas said, as his way of appreciation to the graduating students, cash incentives would be released by his office instead of medals. In previous years, the city gave medals to deserving honor students.
In the incentives scheme, a valedictorian will receive P1,000; salutatorian P700 and P300 for the first honorable mention. There are 53 public elementary schools and 13 secondary schools in the city of Iloilo. It was learned that the different department heads of the city government will donate cash for the students with excellent scholastic performance for the school year 2008-2009.
The list of the recipients of the city-initiated incentives will come from the Iloilo City Superintendent of Schools. The final list of the recipients will be presented as soon as the school commenced.
In the past, the mayor has been giving priority to the public elementary and high schools in Iloilo City particularly in the improvement of the students' writing and reading comprehension skills. They are working for the enhancement of student abilities on Science, Match subjects and even in computers.
The city has been a recipient of several projects particularly from private groups for the public schools to compete with the facilities available in private schools.
