Capiz dad to Maayon, Cuartero folks: Oppose mining
ROXAS CITY – Capiz Board Member Gilbert Ardivilla urged local folks in the towns of Maayon and Cuartero to strongly oppose the impending entry of mining operations in their area.
Ardivilla said mining operations destroy the environment and natural resources and results to global warming which triggers abnormal climate.
Around 1,000 folks attended the consultative meeting conducted in Brgy. Canapian, Maayon, Capiz as called by the provincial board recently.
The out-of-town session of the Capiz provincial board turned into a consultative dialogue after there was no quorum for the session proper in the afternoon of March 19 in Barangay Canapian.
Present during the out-of-town session were board members Ardivilla, Fritz Cruz Am, Estevan “Evan” Contreras, Rommel Lastimoso, Baden Cantiller and Nenita Martilino. Vice Governor Felipe Barredo was also around.
It was learned that there is an existing 50-year moratorium on mining operations in the province of Capiz embodied in a resolution approved by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.
Last year, Gov. Victor Tanco, Sr. issued an executive order directing all concerned to stop receiving and accepting applications for small-scale miners.
