Library holds strorytelling tilt
The Provincial Library Services Division of the Office of the Governor in cooperation with the Association of Public Information Specialists of Negros Occidental, Inc. (APISNO, Inc.) sponsored a storytelling contest in line with the 109th Public Library Day celebration with the theme, “Communication, Values, Good Citizenship: Tools for Efficient Services” at the Provincial Library recently.
In his message, 2nd District Board Member and Chairman of the Committee on Education, Culture and Arts Miller Serondo emphasized the importance of education as a tool to alleviate the poor condition of the Filipino family and the opportunity to take a glimpse of our rich heritage through the oral tradition, storytelling.
Provincial Librarian and APISNO Adviser Joyce Deloso said that the activity is aimed to provide opportunity for students to learn and tell stories from around the world and to reinforce and recognize the power of storytelling as a way to connect generations.
Twelve high school students from various public schools participated in the competition and each of them were given 15 minutes to deliver the story of their own choice.
The participants were judged by Provincial Information Officer Ma. Lina P. Sanogal, National Historical Institute Chairman Roque Hofileña and Negros Museum Executive Director Tanya Lopez, according to their choice of story, memory, projection, diction, personality and poise.
Sophomore student Patricia Mari Mijares of Bacolod City National High School bested eleven others with “The Siopao Who Does Not Like Gluttonous children” as the winning piece with her mother, Marites Mijares, as the coach.
Paulyn Barrientos, also a second year student of Sagay National High School, trained by Daisy Pama, ranked second with the story “Alibaba and the 40 Thieves” while Jashtine Melicado of Doña Monserrat Lopez Memorial High School, Silay City ranked third with “The Tiger and The Hare”, with Sebastia Moraña as the coach .
Other participants are, Sheila Jane Mananquil (Binicuil National High School-Poblacion Extension, Kabankalan City), Marnel Rijon (San Enrique National High School), Helen Joy Grijaldo (Himamaylan High School), Gazelle Felix ( Ramon Torres Sagasa National High School, Bago City), Justine Artifice (SPED High School, Cadiz City), Mary Serlyn Heather Mariblanca (San Carlos National High School), Christine Thel Gaollegue (La Castellana High School) and Ellen Joy Borantes and Aizy May Flores both from Don Simplicio Lizares National High School, Talisay City.
