Dad pushes tuition hike moratorium
BACOLOD CITY -- In consonance with the widespread reports that several private schools here intends to increase tuition fee this coming school opening, Sangguniang Panglungsod Member Greg Gasataya, chairman of the Committee on Education, recently passed a resolution calling for a moratorium on tuition fee increase for all private schools, elementary, secondary and even tertiary level in Bacolod City for school year 2009-2010.
Gasataya said that it is not appropriate on the part of the private schools to give additional burden to the parents since the Philippines as well as the whole world is experiencing economic crisis as reported in various local, national and international media.
"The move for a moratorium will cushion the impact of the existing crisis in the local scenario," Gasataya added.
Gasataya said his resolution is in response to the public clamor that several schools would increase their tuition fees. Gasataya believes that the increase of tuition fee would be detrimental to the financial standing and an added burden to our constituents in the advent of the global crisis.
Gasataya noted that every year, thousands of students from private schools transferred to public schools because their parents could no longer carry the higher rate imposed by the said private schools.
On the other hand, Gasataya, being the chairman of the Solid Waste Management Council, yesterday appealed to all the residents of Bacolod City to practice the "no segregation no collection" policy that will be imposed starting today April 1, 2009. This is in line with the compliance embodied under Republic Act 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
