7 La Paz brgys launch communal garden
Seven barangays in La Paz,Iloilo City were invited by Panay Power Corporation to participate in their Barangay Communal Garden program. This is one of the thrusts of the said company in order to help them increase their income as well as have sufficient food for the family, according to Engr.Adrian Moncada former manager of Panay Power Corporation, now Commercial Operations Manager of Global Business Power Corp. the mother company of Panay Power Corporation.
This program is in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture's program, Gulayan sa Barangay, which is the answer to eradicate hunger and poverty and to reduce under-nutrition especially in families with school age children.
The Dept. of Agriculture conducted training on vegetable production prior to the start of the program. Training included land preparation, method of planting for the different vegetables, water management,control of pests and diseases and fertilizer application. After the training, the Department of Agriculture distributed seeds that were used for planting. Monitoring and evaluation were done by the representatives of both Panay Power Corporation and the Department of Agriculture. Of the seven barangays, only five accepted the invitation.
After three months of operation, final monitoring and evaluation was done and winners were determined based on the area planted, the quality and quantity of the vegetables produced. The awarding of prizes to the winners was done at Panay Power Corporation compound. Present during the awarding were Engr, Moncada, Engr. Henry Alcalde, the new manager of Panay Power Corporation, Engr. Osmondo Marobe and from the Department of Agriculture Ms. Felicitas Neturada, focal person of the Gulayan Program, Mrs. Anita Moncada, RIC coordinator, and the barangay captains and officials of each of the barangays.
Winners were given various garden tools such as spades, spading fork, hoe, sprayers and trowels as prizes. Awards were received by the respective barangay captains. The winners are: fifth place Brgy. Baldoza (Brgy. Capt. Antonio Jaleco), fourth place Brgy. Caingin (Brgy. Capt. Lolita Nogodula), third place Brgy. Banuyao (Brgy. Capt. Estela Andrada), second place Brgy. Ticud (Brgy. Capt. Antonio Hortillosa) and first place Brgy. San Isidro (Brgy. Capt. Felicitas Hortillosa). (EBRivera DA-RAFID-6)
