Monico commends Donaire, Viloria victories
BACOLOD CITY -- Bacolod City Lone District Representative Monico O. Puentevella is set to file House Resolution No. 1102 commending Nonito "the Filipino Flash" Donaire Jr. for defending his title and Brian "the Hawaiian Punch" Villoria for claiming the IBF light flyweight crown during their latest matches dubbed as "The Flash and the Furious" at the Araneta Coliseum last Sunday.
Puentevella cited that last April 19, 2009, Filipino boxers lived up to the expectations of local spectators by humbling their respective opponents in the event dubbed as "The Fast and the Furious" at the Araneta Coliseum.
Reining world champion Donaire marked his third title defense over undefeated challenger Raul "La Cobrita" Martinez via fourth round stoppage before the delighted Filipino fans. Using his speed and strength, Donaire floored his equally-farned Mexican-American foe thrice in the early rounds before finishing off the latter in the fourth to retain his IBF and IBO flyweight belts.
In another much-awaited match, Villoria, defeated Mexico's Ulises Solis to claim the IBF light-flyweight crown. Villoria entered the ring a challenger facing the undefeated Mexican who defended his title for the eighth time. His eleventh round knockout decision earned the Hawaiian-born Filipino not only the title he once held but also his reputation, respect and winning form. Puentevella said that these new feats proved once again that Filipinos are among the best boxers in the world.
"The effort, courage and determination exhibited by these fighters en route to victory are worth emulating not only inside the ring but also in facing real life difficulties and challenges," Puentevella added. He said that it is only proper and fitting that these boxers be given due recognition and appreciation for the honor, pride and inspiration to bring to our country.
