P23M worth of rice given under Food for School Program
About 23 million worth of rice under the Food for School Program (FSP) of President Gloria M. Arroyo had been distributed to school children in Western Visayas since the program started in 2006 until the year 2008.
Records from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Regional Office show that there were 181 municipalities in Region VI that benefited from FSP involving 187,180 beneficiaries.
FSP is an immediate intervention measure of the government to address hunger among families through their children in Day Care Centers in the region, a DSWD official said.
“ It provides a daily ration of 1 kg of rice for at least 120 days in a school year and it is a form of food subsidy for young learners who belong to poor families as long as the child goes to the Day Care Center,” he added.
The province of Aklan has 12,040 beneficiaries from 22 municipalities with rice distributed reaching P1.2 million while Antique has 38, 496 beneficiaries in 42 municipalities having a budget of P13.1 million.
There were 29 municipalities that availed of the program in Capiz having 24, 912 beneficiaries. Total rice given amounted to P2.2 million. Guimaras has more than 2,000 beneficiaries from seven towns having a budget of P295, 000.
FSP in both provinces was from 2006 to 2007 only.
Iloilo province has 42,398 beneficiaries coming from 47 municipalities and got a P3.5 million allocation while Negros Occ. has 66,890 beneficiaries spread from 34 towns and. Rice distributed was close to P5 million. (PIA-LOL)
