Bermejo wants grassroots approach on garbage collection
ROXAS CITY – The city government is planning a holistic approach towards localized garbage collection and trash prevention to further intensify its cleanliness and beautification efforts.
Roxas City Mayor Vicente Bermejo said that the proposal “is to localize the responsibility of garbage collection to barangay officials.”
“It will be on a pilot basis and start with Barangay Banica,” Bermejo stressed during a recent interaction with local mediamen.
The top city executive also added that smaller barangays of the “inner city” will be clustered to proportion the provision of garbage trucks of the city government.
The new approach towards solid waste management is in line with the urban management component of the “SULONG” development framework. SULONG is the acronym for service enhancement, urban management, livelihood generation, organizational development, and new governance.
Meanwhile, the localization of garbage collection in the city supports the national government’s efforts to fully integrate among Filipinos their personal environment responsibilities.
President Gloria Macapagal – Arroyo has also enjoined local government units to fully implement the law on solid waste management (SWM). (PIA/A.Lumaque)
