Ilonggo doc to take US trip for Mayo Clinic’s 'Visiting Clinician Program'
Ilongga physician Dr. Maria Liza Duremdes Nava, M.D., a Fellow of the Philippine College of Physicians, and Affiliate Member of the Philippine Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism, is leaving for the United States of America this June to participate in the ‘Visiting Clinician Program’ of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA.
The program affords physicians from around the world and within the United States a visit to Mayo Clinic for them “to gain additional experience and knowledge on specific disciplines in the field of medicine. It is a venue for the sharing of ideas and information among colleagues from around the world.”
The Visiting Clinician Program is designed to provide an individual experience tailored to a physician’s education and career goals. To participate, individuals must be sponsored by a member of the faculty of Mayo Clinic.
Spornsors for Dr. Maria Liza D. Nava’s stint at the Mayo Clinic are Dr. William F. Young Jr. (for focused experience in Adrenal and Pituitary Disorders) and Dr. Hossein Gharib (for focused experience in thyroid disorders).
Dr. Young is an internationally respected expert in adrenal and pituitary disorders and is currently the Vice Chair of the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition of the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Gharib is an expert in thyroid diseases and is the current President of the American College of Endocrinology, and Past President of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.
As participant to the Visiting Clinician Program of Mayo Clinic, Dr. Maria Liza D. Nava will be on leave as Member of the Faculty, College of Medicine at Central Philippine University where she has been connected since 2004. But she will definitely come back to Iloilo after her US training to extend her medical and professional expertise to her fellow Ilonggos.
A graduate at the University of the Philippines Diliman in Quezon City, she took up her Bachelor of Science in Biology degree from 1991-1995, and her Doctor of Medicine post graduate studies from 1995-1999 at the Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center, University of the East (RMMMC-UE) also in Quezon City.
It was at the RMMMC-UE where she did Postgraduate Internship from 1999-2000 until she took and passed the Medical Board Examinations in August 2000. Her Residency (Specialty) Training in Internal Medicine at the same institution followed from 2001-2003. Later, she took and passed the Philippine Specialty Board in Internal Medicine (PSBIM) on January 2005.
She has likewise undergone Fellowship (Subspecialty) Training in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism (Chief Fellow) at the Makati Medical Center in Makati City , Philippines from 2007 to 2009.
Dr. Maria Liza Duremdes Nava, a native of Dumangas, Iloilo and an officer of the Iloilo Ilang-ilang Jaycees is the daughter of Gilda Duremdes-Nava, retired Human Resources Manager of SM Shoemart Delgado and Shakey’s Iloilo, and Atty. Pablo Roces Nava III, a practicing lawyer and Professor of Law at Central Philippine University.
