SP urges firms to fix cables properly
BACOLOD CITY – Sangguniang Panglungsod (SP) Member Wilson Gamboa Jr. along with SP Member Roberto Rojas proposed last Wednesday a resolution requesting the Central Negros Electric Cooperative Inc. (Ceneco), Philippine Long Distance Company (PLDT), cable television companies and other related businesses to have their overhead aerial cable lines properly arranged and to provide visible identification of ownership of such.
Gamboa cited that "it is a basic need of society, whether private, governmental, commercial, or industrial sector, to have access to electricity and all forms of modern technology, and that in providing these conveniences, there should be safety nets and preventive measures to prevent fire incidents and other similar hazards."
The Bureau of Fire Protection in Bacolod had reported 81 post fire incidents for the period of January to November 2008, one cause of which is the heavy traffic of Northbound cane trucks from Circumferential road to C.L. Montelibano towards Northdrive and Lacson Streets that cause aerial cables to be cut, destroyed or damaged causing power outage due to non-observance of safety clearance by the trucks and the disorderly, hazardous and unsafe arrangement of the cables.
Gamboa said that these disorderly cables refer to lines which congest airspace in an entangled manner, with some precariously hanging, easily reachable by trucks, and without proper markings or tags to identify ownership of it in case of emergency.
He stressed that the primary duty of these concerned companies to ensure the proper, safe and orderly arrangement and installations of their cables, with proper markings for identifications in case of liability.
