Pichay inaugurates water project in Estancia
Intensified government efforts aimed at stabilizing water system in the country reaches Iloilo’s northernmost town with millions in allocated fund.
Welcomed today by officials and locals in Estancia, Iloilo is Chairman Prospero Pichay Jr. of the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA).
The LWUA under Pichay’s helm has been instrumental in aggressive rehabilitation and construction of water supply projects nationwide. Focused has since been made on provincial areas and those dubbed as “waterless municipalities.”
In the case of Estancia, development and influx of investments have caused Mayor Restituto Mosqueda to seek further outside help in order to address the town’s growing needs.
Mosqueda’s efforts paid off with the LWUA coming in with a reported multi-million water supply development program.
“We need the repair and rehabilitation of our existing water system here and LWUA’s support will greatly improve and increase our capability. We are faced with similar concerns of other local government units on the lack of sufficient water supply. With Chairman Pichay’s intervention and response to our need, I am confident that we will soon realize the full potential of Estancia water system. This is good news for us all especially our investors,” Mayor Mosqueda told The News Today (TNT).
To note, the LWUA has completed the construction of water supply projects in forty-five provincial areas at overall cost of P 239 million.
Pichay in his media pronouncements said the completed projects were part of the 220 water supply system development projects that LWUA has targeted for completion this year.
The LWUA, in its official website further explained that the office “has accelerated and expanded its water supply development program to support the fulfillment of one of President Arroyo's priority legacy programs, that of providing safe drinking water to every barangay by 2010.”
“The completed projects involved the further improvement or expansion of water supply systems of the beneficiary water districts. A few projects were also for the rehabilitation of water systems of certain water districts in Iloilo province that were damaged by Typhoon Frank and other recent destructive typhoons,” Chairman Pichay added. “Generally, the projects involved the development of additional surface or groundwater sources; the construction of water impounding, pumping and storage facilities with provision for water treatment or disinfection; the installation of transmission and distribution lines as well as metered household individual service connections and fire hydrants for fire-fighting and other emergencies.”
In Iloilo, LWUA projects were implemented in Lemery, Calinog, Duenas, Dumarao, Miag-ao, Janiuay and Tubungan. Elsewhere in the Panay Island was a LWUA project in Pandan, Antique and Nabas, Aklan.
