DPWH pushes for strict enforcement of the Anti-Overloading Law
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) stood firm in its decision to apprehend cargo and hauler trucks that violate Republic Act 8794 or the Anti-Overloading Law.
DPWH regional director Rolando Asis said several cargo trucks that have been contracted to deliver materials to the coal plant project of the Global Business Power Corporation (GBPC) and the Iloilo Flood Control Project (IFCP) are exceeding the load limit as prescribed by the law.
Asis said the load limit should not exceed 13.5 tons per access.
The regional director also said that the agency will continue to apprehend violators because overloading trucks damage the national and city roads.
“They should stop the practice otherwise they have to pay the penalties imposed by the Land Transportation Office (LTO),” he said.
He added that a Weigh Bridge permanently stationed in Buhang, Jaro and another movable weighing instrument are being used to determine if the cargo or hauler trucks are exceeding the load limit.
“We have already apprehended a lot of violators,” he added.
Just recently, the DPWH met with Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas to resolve the problem but they did not come up with a win-win solution.
Instead, the DPWH recommended that the contractors of the said projects to settle the concern with their haulers to prevent further problems.
Both projects are situated in Iloilo City. (PNA)
