Neg. Occ. to give rice subsidy to sugar farm workers
BACOLOD CITY – The provincial government of Negros Occidental will release P15 million worth of rice subsidy to sugar farm workers affected by the “tiempo muerto” or off-milling season starting third week of July.
There are about 375,000 sugar farm workers in the province.
Gov. Isidro P. Zayco said the rice subsidy will be given under the "Food for Work" program of the province.
There will be 8,000 sacks of rice for the 83,000 sugar farm workers.
On his list, San Carlos City will receive 64 sacks for its 738 sugar farm workers; La Carlota City will receive 640 sacks for its 6,751 sugar farm workers and a lot more.
Gov. Zayco said that sugar planters also have their own assistance for their workers during the dead season.
The province also had their share in helping the sugar farm workers to help minimize the impact of the off-milling season, Zayco said.
August is the lean month for the sugar farm workers thus the province finds it necessary to provide this rice assistance to them, the governor said.
