Controversial skywalk in Roxas City now open for public use
ROXAS CITY – The controversial skywalk constructed in front of Filamer Christian College (FCC) is now open for public use.
It was blessed and inaugurated last Friday by Rep. Antonio del Rosario, Vice Mayor Ronnie Dadivas (in behalf of the city government), Brgy. Capt. Roberto Avelino, representative from Brgy. XI, and Dr. Expedito A. Señeres, president of FCC.
Rep. del Rosario said he initiated the construction of the skywalk to help each traffic congestion in the area as well as ensure the safety of pedestrians.
He said the project has a budget of P3.5 million but he was able to lower it to P3.1 million with or a savings of P400,000.
DPWH Regional Director Rolando M. Asis, said the skywalk project is the second project outside Iloilo City since there is still no skywalk in Aklan, Antique, Guimaras and Bacolod City.
On his part, Gov. Victor Tanco, Sr. said the project was the realization of Cong. Del Rosario's objective of decongesting the heavy traffic in the city adding that the said project is the symbol of Del Rosario’s love for his constituents.
“I’m hoping that more skywalks will come in Roxas City,” Tanco said.
It was learned that the 1st district solon has proposed to construct three skywalks with a total budget of P10 million. Del Rosario, however, later trimmed the projects down into one and realigned the funds to other more important projects.
The said project is the second skywalk in the city. The first one was constructed during the stint of former Cong. Rodriquez Dadivas which also connects the two school buildings of Capiz State University (CAPSU) main campus along Fuentes Drive here.
Earlier, City Mayor Vicente Bermejo opposed the said projects claiming that there was no consultation made and it will destroy the view of Roxas City.
