'Review on Anti-GMO Bill will lead to Amendment'
Provincial Board Member Gary Acuña said the review of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Ordinance 007 or the Anti-GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) will lead to amendment of the Ordinance.
The council met yesterday to discuss the direction of the review.
Acuna said the review will lead to the amendment of some provisions of the law to make it more responsive and implementable.
Atty. Jose Ma. Valencia, Provincial Legal officer, said that the Governor cannot issue a moratorium through an Executive Order on the said Ordinance.
No Executive Order can supersede a law, he said.
The ban on GMO products especially corn has its serious impact to the poultry, hog and livestock industry in the province.
Mr. Albert Lim, President of the Negros Occidental Commercial Hog Raisers Association, Mr. Manuel Puey, President of the Poultry Raisers Assn. and Mr. Rosendo dela Rama, President of the Hog Raisers of Negros Occidental appealed to the provincial government for a moratorium of the Ordinance.
They said they are not against organic farming, but they should be given the choice whether they will go organic or use GMO products.
