Thinking positive
Last month, Planters Bank held SME Speaker Series, with Francis Pangilinan as the speaker.
Perhaps the best lesson I've learned from his speech is this: Positive thoughts, positive reaction, positive results.
Pangilinan said, “If you think about negative thoughts, do you notice that your heart race and you feel bad? Then you do something negative as a result of that? Whereas, if you think positive about something, you'll feel good and end up doing positive things, gaining positive results.”
We're all guilty, at one time or another, of blowing up because of what somebody said or did. Pangilinan advises that before reacting, stop and think. By thinking, you'll be able to consider the best reaction, which is of course, positive reaction. It's always better to be calm than to be angry. It's always better to smile than frown. It's always better to love than hate. Human that we are, we are prone to forget, so we end up getting angry, frustrated or worried especially when it's a more impulsive reaction. Because, it's easier said than done, right?
I was reminded of my friend Faith, a sales person who uses the high-tech approach of dealing with herself when confronted with difficult people. Every hour, her cellphone reminds her of this: Love God and your neighbor. “It's quite effective. That phrase alone reminds me of the choices that I have to make every time I interact with difficult people,” she said. No wonder why she's always calm amid her problems and smiles even at the most obnoxious bloke.
Back to the SME Speaker Series, another lesson that Mr. Pangilinan shared to us was the CENTS principle. If you want the best in you to come out, you have to consider CENTS in choosing your endeavors.
C means Contribution. “Can I contribute in this endeavor or choice?” E means Excellence. “Can I excel in this field?” N means “Natural Ability. Can I connect it with a natural gift?” That's something you take from within. When you were a kid, what were you doing that really gave you so much satisfaction? Mr. Pangilinan said that those whose careers now are related to what gave them happiness when they were kids, are happier compared to those whose career were made because they were forced into it by pressures or financial need. T means Turn On. “Does the idea turn me on?” and S means Spirit Leading. “What is the spirit inside me telling me?”
He said: If it makes sense to you, it makes sense to do it.
