Cory instrumental in Bermejo’s political career
ROXAS CITY – City Mayor Vicente Bermejo yesterday led the city officials in offering mass for the late Pres. Cory Aquino at the Roxas City Cathedral.
“Cory, as we all loved to call her, opened the opportunity for me to join public service. She was the one who appointed me as OIC mayor of Panay in 1998 which ushered my political career up to the present,” Bermejo said.
According to him, Cory is just an ordinary housewife catapulted into power by the 1986 bloodless EDSA revolution adding that she was the president who restored democracy in the face of threats of civil disobedience and coup attempts.
The city mayor also said that Cory is the symbol of religiosity and morality in governance.
He added that the former president signed R.A. 7160 or the Local Government Code of 1991 which eventually set the cornerstone of local governance and decentralization in the country.
He also said that she was evolved into an icon of a prayerful mother who thinks and prays more for her country. “We certainly miss her,” Bermejo added.
“Let us all join the Filipino nation in prayer and in remembering her contribution to history,” he said as he called on the people to pray and remember her legacy in us.
The Roxas City Cathedral was full of yellow ribbons while most of those who attended the mass wore yellow dresses.
