City awards IDs, discount booklets to disabled
Mayor Jerry P. Treñas yesterday awarded identification cards and discount booklets to an initial batch of 15 disabled persons here registered with the Office of Person with Disability Affairs (OPDA).
The IDs and discount booklets are in compliance with the provisions of Republic Act 9442, known as the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons, intended for the provision of medical and related discounts and special privileges.
OPDA head Dolores Laudenorio said the office was created due to the magna carta and so far the city has registered 4,200 applicants with disability. OPDA serves as the coordinating body for 15 non-government and government organizations working for the needs of persons with disability (PWDs) in this southern city.
Under the law, the PWDs are entitled discounts of at least 20 percent from all establishments such as hotels, lodging establishments, restaurants, sports and recreation centers and the purchase of medicines.
The PWDs are also entitled to admission fees, medical and dental privileges in government and private facilities, air and sea transportation privileges regulated by the Maritime Industry Authority and the Civil Aeronautics Board; land transportation privileges and educational privileges.
The PWDs are given discounts on basic necessities and prime commodities of five percent on regular retail price listed under the Section 2 (a) and (b) of the Joint DTI-DA Administrative Order 02, series of 2008 commensurate to the PWDs excusive consumption within the week.
Laudenorio said the total amount of the purchase shall not exceed P1,300 per week without carry over of the unused amount. (PNA)
