‘Greening pa’ named special rep to vets office
ROXAS CITY – Retired Brig. Gen. Victor Corpus, who introduced a novel reforestation project called “Greening Panay” at the vast military reservation in Capiz about 15 years ago, has been appointed by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as Special Presidential Representative to the Office of the Veterans Affairs.
Corpus, former director of the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (ISAFP), is a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class 1967.
In the early 1990s, while serving as civil-military relations officer of the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division at Camp Macario Peralta in Barangay Jaena Norte, Jamindan, Capiz in the island of Panay, Corpus introduced a project to plant some idle areas in the 33,000-hectare military reservation with trees to make them a vanguard against environmental degradation and at the same time productive in line with the government’s sustainable environmental protection program.
Camp Peralta is located between the municipalities of Jamindan and Tapaz in the province of Capiz.
Corpus’s “Greening Panay” project generated multisectoral support including national government agencies, local government units and non-government organizations.
Because of his experience in the project, Corpus, who has been called as “Father of Greening Panay,” was tapped as resource person in other reforestation-related projects in the country. (PIA)
