Henry Huertas who was killed by a
powerful explosion that destroyed
his house.
BACOLOD CITY — A powerful explosion tore down a house believed to be used as a makeshift firecracker factory in Bacolod City yesterday morning killing one person.
The explosion also triggered a fire that burned the house situated in 27th Calamba Streets, Purok Tuna, Barangay 1 this city.
Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) officials later learned that the house was owned by couple Henry and Nona Huertas.
Henry, who was reportedly making pyrotechnics when the explosion happened, sustained serious injuries on the different parts of his body causing his instantaneous death.
His body was found by fire personnel trapped inside the house partly covered by debris.
Initial police investigation showed that about a half-kilo pyrotechnic powder caused the powerful explosion.
The victim’s wife Nona said her husband was making firecrackers in preparation for the upcoming Masskara Festival and the holiday season.
She said they had been producing firecrackers and pyrotechnics for quite a long time now, so she did not expect it to happen.
Meantime, the BFP warned the public against manufacturing of firecrackers without necessary permits especially those who situate their makeshift factory in the crowded areas like squatter communities.
