Bad eggs 1
It has been said that one of the reasons why the traffic problem of Iloilo City cannot be solved is the existence of incompetent traffic auxiliaries. It is public knowledge that most of the traffic auxiliaries are hired not because of their qualifications but because of political accommodation. That is why most of the time we are seeing traffic aides who are not serious enough in doing their jobs but are more interested in waiting for opportune time when they can milk the unfortunate drivers. In one instance Bull’s Eye has seen how a jeepney driver “threw” a 20-peso bill to a traffic aide near Molo plaza at an early hour of 9:30 in the morning. We can just imagine how many P20 bills the said traffic aide could collect by the end of the day. Another example is a traffic aide walking at the corner of Gen. Luna-Jalandoni streets near the University of San Agustin who flagged down a jeepney driver even if it was not yet within the yellow box. The traffic aide rode on the jeepney and alighted in front of the Iloilo City Police Office headquarters which is actually only a few meters away from where he flagged down the jeepney. Worse, the traffic aide did not even say “thank you” to the jeepney driver as he never paid his fare. Sobra pa sa pulis ang tonto!

These actuations of some traffic aides makes us think of the abuses that could be committed by the police auxiliaries the city government wants to employ in the coming days. Tonto gani ang mga traffic aide ano pa gid ayhan kon police auxiliary na gid! Besides, the police organization itself is full of bad eggs which it cannot even control.
Environmental concern
It’s good that a group of lawyers is taking by heart the implementation of environmental laws in our city and our country as a whole. Indeed, it is impossible why the Iloilo City government failed to convert its open dump in Calajunan, Mandurriao into a sanitary landfill after almost nine years given the vast government resources. It is just a matter of determining the right priorities and seriousness on the part of our city officials in implementing the laws concerning our environment.
